The book that has made me stop and re-read is, without a doubt, the A Soldier’s Heart by John Irving. I was recently given a copy of this novel to review and I must say that I thought it was an excellent piece of work from a true master of writing. This is not a book for everyone but if you are an avid reader you will find this to be a book that will challenge you and bring you back time again.
In the story of A Soldier’s Heart the main character, Richard Jewell is dealing with his recent breakup with his girlfriend; however, he is also trying to move on with his life. However, when his ex-girlfriend goes missing while out on her lunch break he has no idea what to do. This is when he gets involved in a local car crash that involves his cousin who died while making a call. Richard is determined to find his girlfriend, he’s looking for answers and wants answers about what really happened.
This is shown throughout the story as Richard is given such bravery to try things that most people may not be comfortable with. The story challenges the reader as to whether or not Richard can go to war and what he chooses to do with his life. Some parts of the story will make you laugh and some will make you upset but all in all, you should find yourself smiling from time to time because of the plight Richard faces.
A Soldier’s Heart is available in both a hardback edition and a paperback edition. The paperback version of this book is rare in the United States as it only comes out once a year. Both the hardback and paperback versions have many pages in them that are informative. They will help the reader to understand the story better as well as answer any questions they may have.
The story tells us about the importance of taking wise choices with your life and it teaches you about patience and perseverance. It is a must read for anyone that wants to change their lives for the better and avoid bad decisions in the future. You’ll be able to see things as they happen in this book and hopefully make different choices in the future.
The storyline of A Soldier’s Heart is so simple yet is filled with life lessons that need to be learned. The book doesn’t take itself too seriously, but instead, takes the time to explain a few important things that everyone should know.
The hardback edition of this book is also quite beautiful and gives the reader a good look at the artwork and layout. The main characters of the story are as fascinating as the story they are a part of.
Each character of A Soldier’s Heart is unique and has their own storyline that can easily be memorized by anyone. The way the author writes makes the characters come alive and has you rooting for the main character to make the right decision. These characters are not just passive bystanders in the story but stand up for themselves and do something to change their life for the better.
Each character also has their own traits and characteristics that you can relate to. I think that it is great how the author gives insight into some of the characters’ pasts and why they are the way they are. The author doesn’t shy away from asking questions or trying to get answers out of the characters, he will let you see what the characters are really like and why they are the way they are.
The story behind this book is about the conflict between one man’s heart and the world around him. It challenges the reader as to how a person will take action in certain situations and make changes in their life.
If you have a difficult time making decisions, feel as though you don’t know where you are going in life, or want to learn more about life, A Soldier’s Heart is a book for you. It will challenge you as to how much will you suffer but will make you feel the sense of belonging and will eventually make you feel as though you were a part of the story.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and I hope that you will, too. I enjoyed reading the book and I will definitely be picking up the next one that comes out.
